about

In 2013, in an effort to tap into the richness of the talent pool in the fledging underground Hip-hop scene in Kampala, Buka Chimey MC and his friend Geno Mafeey, formed the group Bantu Clan. Buka Chimey had a passion for unifying and identifying authentic indigenous sounds. Geno Mafeey as well had the passion for indigenous languages that championed the cause and existence of Bantu Clan. The synergy between these two individuals informed the formation of the hip-hop outfit.

Bantu in this case stands for Brothers Alliance Navigating Towards Unity. Bantu Clan is an indigenous hip-hop band comprised of both the founders and a Zimbabwean lady called Kendie Lava who sings and raps in Shona, as well as another emcee called Tkay15 from central Uganda who raps in Luganda. Though the co-founder, Buka Chimey MC has to be marked as one of the next big icons to come out of the Ugandan hip-hop industry and probably the hottest export from Busoga in this genre. He was recently nominated for the Eastern Rapper of The Year, Uganda Hip-Hop Awards 2016.

The group got its first break after the youth & Hip Hop boot camp 2013, which was facilitated by Bayimba cultural foundation and funded by the Royal Danish Embassy Danish and Center For Culture Development. Bantu Clan has performed at the a concerts of Abramz, the 11th Annual Hip Hop summit, the Bayimba Regional Festival (Jinja, 2014), Sawa World Day, and most recently at the Bayimba International Festival as well as the 4th Annual Youth Festival.

Bantu Clan has released several musical works, with the most prominent being the song titled Africa Ni Leo, a song that has received international acclaim as evidenced by the variety of remixes and reprises available. Africa Ni Leo topped charts on BBC Radio. Their music has been classified as conscious and authentic. It is colorfully characterized by signature African sounds, which lend it a homegrown feel.

Well known as being the first and all time hip-hop band in Uganda, Bantu Clan are back in “the kitchen”, baking something for their fans. They are working on a 7-track album entitled Border II Border, featuring 7 artistes from 7 different countries. Yet they have still managed to reach across the border for a musical collaboration with Saint Evo The Myth for his upcoming JERU The Album. Ekibobo was born.

Ekibobo is a musical work that narrates childhood stories of past and present generations. It is a song that will still reverberate with soon to come generations and maybe celebrated as a “fossilized piece” of bygone memories.
